			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It can be very difficult to manage your bipolar disorder and other problems.  Getting help from a counselor or other professional is very important and can provide you with much help and insights in dealing with your current problem. Here are some techniques a person can use to help manage their  bipolar disorder.</p>
<p>Learn to take it one day at a time. Instead of worrying about how you will get through the rest of the week or coming month, try to focus on today. Each day can provide us with different opportunities to learn new things and that includes learning how to deal with your problems. Focus on the present and stop trying to predict what may happen next week. Next week will take care of itself. </p>
<p>A good way to manage your fear is to challenge your negative thinking with positive statements and realistic thinking. When encountering thoughts that make your fearful or anxious, challenge those thoughts by asking yourself questions that will maintain objectivity and common sense. </p>
<p>Sometimes, we may be nervous doing a certain task that may be scary. When this happens, visualize yourself doing the task in your mind. For instance, you and your team have to play in the championship game in front of a large group of people in the next few days. Before the big day comes, imagine yourself playing the game in your mind. Imagine that you are playing in front of a large audience. By playing the game in your mind, you will be better prepared to perform for real when the time comes. Self-Visualization is a great way to reduce the fear and stress of a coming situation. </p>
<p>Remember that no one can predict the future with one hundred percent certainty. Even if the thing that you feared does happen there are circumstances and factors that you can not predict which can be used to your advantage. For instance, you miss the deadline for a project you have been working on for the last few months. Everything you feared is coming true. Suddenly, your boss comes to your office and tells you that the deadline is extended and that he forgot to tell you the day before. This unknown factor changes everything. Remember: we may be ninety-nine percent correct in predicting the future, but all it takes is for that one percent to make a world of difference.</p>
<p>Be smart in how you deal with your fears. Do not try to tackle everything all at once. When facing a current or upcoming task that overwhelms you with a lot of anxiety, break the task into a series of smaller steps. Completing these smaller tasks one at a time will make the stress more manageable and increases your chances of success.</p>
<p>The important thing is to get the proper help by seeing a professional. Avoiding your problem will do nothing in the long run. Managing your bipolar disorder and your fears will take some hard work. Be patience, persistent and stay committed in trying to solve your problem.</p>

<p>It may be hard to be festive and enjoy the holiday cheer when you&#8217;re struggling financially, when you&#8217;re beating yourself up for being little better off than you were last year at this time, or while wallowing in guilt over any improprieties you may have committed during your last manic jag.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Spending sprees or unemployment may have left you with little money for buying gifts for your friends and family. The thought of spending time with friends and family may fill you with anxiety.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>How, then, to survive the holidays?</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Here are seven holiday survival tips to help people with bipolar disorder get through the holidays:</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>1. Avoid alcohol <br />&#13;</p>
<p>Aside from the fact that many of us with bipolar disorder also have addiction issues, the medications you may be taking often react poorly with alcohol. Many of the medications commonly prescribed for bipolar disorder are hard enough on the liver as it is – add alcohol to the mix and you&#8217;re asking for trouble. Besides, as the adage goes, you won&#8217;t find any solutions in the bottle.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>2. Choose social events wisely<br />&#13;</p>
<p>Spending time with other people is one of the best things you can do for yourself, but it&#8217;s alright to be picky. Avoid people and places that trigger mood episodes. If you know you would be tempted to drink at a certain party, feel no guilt about sending your regrets beforehand. For events you do attend, have a backup plan in case it becomes overwhelming – you can leave at any time. You don&#8217;t owe anyone an explanation and you don&#8217;t need to make excuses. Take care of yourself.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>3. Limit spending on gifts<br />&#13;</p>
<p>We have a great tradition in our family of drawing names for gifts and putting spending limits on the gift. This takes a lot of pressure off, knowing you don&#8217;t have to buy the perfect gift for everyone, and you can practically eliminate shopping time. Money is a huge issue for most of us, and the temptation is to overspend and use plastic. Don&#8217;t. Instead, put a little bit of cash aside each week for occasions like the holidays that happen every year. Spend only what you have. This may actually allow you to make your gifts more creative and speak from the heart. If you have no money, make a card and tell the person how much they mean to you.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>4. Stay on a regular sleep schedule, eat well and exercise<br />&#13;</p>
<p>Missing a night of good sleep can be worse for you than missing a dose of medication. Keep a regular schedule. Watch what you eat – we tend to eat to calm our emotions in the holidays. Eat what you need for good health but don&#8217;t overindulge. If you aren&#8217;t exercising daily, take the time to establish the habit – you might even ask for a gym membership or a beginner&#8217;s yoga class for Christmas.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>5. &#8216;Just say no&#8217;<br />&#13;</p>
<p>When we&#8217;re feeling good, we&#8217;re feeling really good. The temptation may be to over-commit to activities or to agree to do things out of wanting to please rather from the sincere desire to do those things. This can lead to you feeling overwhelmed, triggering a depressive episode. Practice saying no, even to things you want to do. See how many times you can say no to people and get away with it. This will make it easier to say no to things you don&#8217;t want to do or you&#8217;re ambivalent about.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>6. Be honest<br />&#13;</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re worried about money for gifts, concerned about attending a party, or anxious about seeing someone, be as open and honest as you can be beforehand. Clear the air before the actual event so that you can enjoy it more. Sometimes telling how you feel can make you very vulnerable, but this openness is a strength, no matter how people may react.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>7. Keep responsibilities minimal<br />&#13;</p>
<p>Think twice before inviting the whole family over for dinner. If there&#8217;s someone else who can be host or hostess, let them and perhaps offer to help. The less stress you have, the better able you&#8217;lll be to take care of yourself, enjoy the holidays, and allow others to enjoy you.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>I hope these seven tips help you. In most families and circles of friends, seeing you doing well will be the best gift of all. Don&#8217;t worry so much about buying presents – you are a worthwhile human being, and that&#8217;s present enough.</p>

-Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a category of mood disorders defined by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally elevated mood clinically referred to as mania or, if milder, hypomania. Individuals who experience manic episodes also commonly experience depressive episodes or symptoms, or mixed episodes in which features of both mania and depression are present at the same time. These episodes are usually separated by periods of &#8220;normal&#8221; mood, but in some individuals, depression and mania may rapidly alternate, known as rapid cycling. Extreme manic episodes can sometimes lead to psychotic symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations. The disorder has been subdivided into bipolar I, bipolar II, cyclothymia, and other types, based on the nature and severity of mood episodes experienced; the range is often described as the bipolar spectrum. -Schizophrenia a mental disorder characterized by abnormalities in the perception or expression of reality. It most commonly manifests as auditory hallucinations, paranoid or bizarre delusions, or disorganized speech and thinking with significant social or occupational dysfunction. Onset of symptoms typically occurs in young adulthood, with approximately 0.40.6% of the population affected. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Bipolar disorder is serious. It is an illness that can affect relationships, careers, and lives. People with bipolar disorder may exhibit manic moods like high energy, being very talkative, restless or reckless one minute and being depressed showing signs of sadness, crying, and lack of energy the next minute. It is this &#8220;swing&#8221; that gives the disorder its name.&#13;</p>
<p>Bipolar can occur in men and women equally and currently affects over 2 million people. Symptoms of bipolar are often seen in early childhood, although the onset is usually during the early 20s. Connections have even been found between bipolar disorder (BPD) and ADHD.&#13;</p>
<p>BPD is hard to diagnose in young children, because BPD and ADHD have similar symptoms. It is just as difficult to diagnose adolescents due to the many hormonal changes in the overall development which cause unbalance. It is difficult to discern if the adolescent is acting normally or if the mood swings are symptoms of BPD. In adults, other problems that will most often occur in conjunction with BPD, making it easier to diagnose. Some of the problems that can occur with BPD include drugs and/or alochol use or abuse, seasonal depression and anxiety disorders.&#13;</p>
<p>After diagnosis, there are ways to treat BPD. The most popular methods are with mood stabilizing drugs and psychotherapy. Before taking any medications, a few considerations need to be taken. Children and young adults sometimes have higher suicidal thoughts and tendencies while on mood stabilizing drugs. Medications should be used under extreme caution, or other measures of control should be put into practice for younger people diagnosed with BPD. Continuous therapy (both drug and psycho) should be used even when the &#8220;cured&#8221; feeling sets in. In other words, the drugs and therapy may be for life or until such time as your doctor feels it is medically necessary to remove or discontinue them.&#13;</p>
<p>A medical doctor, psychiatrist and/or psychologist will prove to be a qualified team to affectively monitor and prevent the illness from worsening.&#13;</p>
<p>Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent BPD. The best thing to do is begin treatment as quickly as possible. To do that, you must be familiar with the symptoms. Symptoms of BPD include:&#13;</p>
<p>•  Excessive happiness or hopefulness&#13;<br />
•  Restlessness coupled with a need for less sleep&#13;<br />
•  Distractibility&#13;<br />
•  Racing thoughts&#13;<br />
•  High sex drive&#13;<br />
•  Inflated self-esteem&#13;<br />
•  Tendency to make larger than attainable plans&#13;<br />
•  Change in appetite causing weight loss or gain&#13;<br />
•  Thoughts of death or suicide&#13;<br />
•  Suicide attempt&#13;</p>
<p>If you or someone you know may have BPD , it is important that you note the severity of the symptoms listed above and how long they last. The most telling symptom of BPD however, is in the extremity of the mood swings – extreme highs and lows that do not follow a set pattern. Do not attempt to self-diagnose BPD. If you suspect BPD, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Your medical doctor can assess your situation and help you find a psychiatrist or psychologist to aid in your treatment.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>&#8220;Annette?s&#8221; struggles began at age 14, when she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. It was at this time, that her mother, also suffering from this illness, committed suicide. When she needed friends the most, she was ostracized by her schoolmates once they learned of her illness. Throughout her life she had the loving support of her father and sisters. </p>
<p>Annette&#8217;s 26 year struggle to take control of her bipolar disorder was sidelined numerous times due to repeated hospitalizations. For this reason, it took her 10 years to earn her Bachelor&#8217;s Degree. Her efforts to be independent were also impacted by her bipolar disorder, causing her to lose employment several times.</p>
<p>In 2001, Annette sought help at Pacific Clinics. As she started to manage her bipolar symptoms, her work hours and responsibilities were increased. She was doing well until 2003 when she relapsed and was hospitalized four times in an eight month period. It was during this period that she learned self-help techniques to gain control of her illness&#8211;and she&#8217;s never looked back. </p>
<p>Once back at work, she worked part time in Pacific Clinics outpatient and day treatment CalWORKs program. Now that she has her life on track, she shares her personal experience with clients and works hard with them to help them understand that they too can gain control of their illness.</p>
<p>In just five years, she went from consumer to a full time mental health worker (case manager) at Pacific Clinics. She has been struggling with bipolar disorder for 26 years yet she never gave up hope. Her compassionate and heartfelt message to others with mental illness is, &#8220;If I can do it, you can do it too.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Janie&#8217;s life was going well until about a year ago when her boyfriend of five years, Jim, suddenly decided to end their relationship. It was extremely difficult for Janie because the two of them had discussed marriage earlier in their relationship, but it came even more difficult when she found out that Jim later married one of her dear friends from high school. </p>

<p>Janie has has steadily gone downhill since that happened and her close friends and family have noticed things about her that they never had in the past. For example, Janie sometimes would talk rapidly where no one else could get in a word. She also began talking &#8220;out of sorts&#8221; about the faces she would see floating around in her house and how they were telling her that her father, an former active duty marine, would be entrusted with secret government materials that was going to save America in the war on terror. She would also sometimes laugh uncontrollably about small things that others really didn&#8217;t find funny.</p>

<p>Janie may have been suffering from symptoms of Bipolar Disorder. People with Bipolar Disorder are also often referred to a Manic Depressive. People with Bipolar Disorder can have serious, sometimes even violent moodswings. As in the example above, Janie could just as easily go from laughing, to crying uncontrollably, to even lashing out in violence. Although you may not believe that a person who seems normally gentle could behave in this manner you must realize that people who are Manic Depressive do not have normal personality traits. Their &#8220;normal&#8221; state of mind may be as gentle as can be, but they can have violent mood swings that they&#8217;re not in control of. Some Bipolar patients may lash out for no apparent reason at all.</p>

<p>People that suffer from this disorder can sometimes have delusions of doing something great or they may believe they have some type of magic powers or special abilities. They may also go through phases of needing very little sleep. This can also be a sign of drug use such as cocaine or methamphetamines. Bipolar Disorder can sometimes be very difficult to diagnose because of the multiple symptoms that are shared by other disorders, which by the way, may also be present at the same time.
